About Body Mass Index (BMI)
The ideal BMI is between 19-25.
Obesity, defined as a BMI of more than 30, is a growing problem throughout the world. These people are more likely to require operations such as hip and knee replacements, and their excess weight poses an increased risk. Therefore BMI is a good indication of risk for the patient.
A BMI greater than 27 indicates a risk for developing type 2 diabetes - according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.
